it is thought to be a general noun for a long sword rather than a proper name for a particular sword , since the term is found in various situations and it literally refers to ' a sword with 10 tsuka long ' (tsuka is a unit of length; one tsuka is equal to the length of a fist ), therefore the totsuka no tsurugi in several myths are considered different from each other . 様々な場面で登場していることや、「10束（束は長さの単位で、拳1つ分の幅）の長さの剣」という意味の名前であることから、一つの剣の固有の名称ではなく、長剣の一般名詞と考えられ、それぞれ別の剣であるとされる。
